Laura Davies to play in men's event

MALMO, Sweden, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Laura Davies announced Thursday that she will become the fourth woman this year to compete in a men's golfing event.

She said she will play in the Korean Open, which is scheduled for Oct. 9-12 at the Woo Jung Hills Country Club. Sergio Garcia is the defending champion and the field also is expected to include John Daly, one of the most popular figures in golf.

"I've been playing really well," said the 40-year-old Davies, a 20-time winner on the LPGA Tour. "I'll be going out there with some expectations. Essentially, not to win. That would be silly."

Davies, who has played in team events with men, will follow in the footsteps of LPGA Tour superstar Annika Sorenstam, PGA club pro Suzy Whaley and 13-year-old amateur Michelle Wie.
