The move came on Wednesday, one day after Joe Nieuwendyk left the Stanley Cup champions to join the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Terms of the deal for Larionov were not disclosed. He is the oldest player in the NHL, and won Stanley Cups with Detroit in 1997, '98 and 2002 after a distinguished international career in the Soviet Union.

Larionov has 168 goals and 465 assists in 872 regular-season NHL games, also having played for Vancouver, San Jose, and Florida.

After three seasons with the Canucks, one in Switzerland, and two more with the Sharks, he was traded to the Red Wings for Ray Sheppard on Oct. 24, 1996. A year later, he helped Detroit win its first Stanley Cup in 42 years.

The Red Wings won the title the following season and in 2002, a year after re-acquiring Larionov from Florida.

In 74 games with Detroit last season, he had 10 goals and 33 assists.
