Towers (5-1) allowed all four hits in seven innings, did not walk a batter and struck out five. Walker worked the final two innings for the Blue Jays, who held Detroit scoreless over the final 22 innings of the series. Towers has not lost since Aug. 10 and is 4-0 with a save in his last six appearances.

Chris Mears (0-2) lasted just two batters into the third inning and was charged with five runs and six hits. He allowed home runs to Catalanotto in the first and third.

The Blue Jays made it 3-0 in the second on RBI singles by Bobby Kielty and Orlando Hudson. Catalanotto's second homer made it 4-0 in the third before Eric Hinske scored the second run of the inning when Carlos Delgado grounded into a double play.

Vernon Wells added an RBI single in the fifth and Hinske scored later in the inning when Greg Myers hit into a double play.

The final Toronto run scored on a passed ball by Matt Walbeck in the eighth.

The Tigers (37-105) have lost three straight games following a three-game winning streak and need six wins in their last 20 games to avoid matching the major league record of 120 losses set by the 1962 New York Mets.
