NY Rangers sign 42-year-old Mark Messier

NEW YORK, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- New York Rangers 42-year-old captain Mark Messier will be back for a 25th NHL season.

Terms were not disclosed. Messier was paid $3.9 million last season, when he was sixth on the team in scoring with 18 goals and 22 assists in 78 games.

Last November, Messier moved into second place on the all-time NHL list for games played. He leads active players with 1,844 points, which ranks third all-time behind former teammate Wayne Gretzky and just six behind Hall of Famer Gordie Howe.

"Mark's Hall of Fame career speaks for itself, but it is the intangible characteristics that are such a positive for our hockey club," Rangers general manager and coach Glen Sather said.

"He is a champion, a leader and a warrior whose only priority is to see the Rangers regain their position among the NHL's top clubs."
