Reports: Men's hoops at Auburn probed

MONTGOMERY, Ala., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Another men's basketball program is in the eye of the NCAA.

Reports Thursday indicated that Auburn is being investigated for major violations. The school has received an official letter of inquiry.

The Montgomery Advertiser said the probe includes improper offers and provisions to former McComb, Miss., standout Jackie Butler and another recruit.

The Mobile Register identified the coaches involved as current assistant Shannon Weaver and former assistant Mike Wilson. The school is not being cited either for failing to monitor the program or for a lack of institutional control.

"Given our program's efforts to comply with the NCAA rules at all times, I am obviously very disappointed," Coach Cliff Ellis said in a statement. "Our program has cooperated fully with this very thorough investigation, and I have the utmost faith and confidence in our coaches, both present and former."

The Register indicated the school has until Nov. 5 to respond to the notice.

The school said in a statement that the letter of inquiry contains no new allegations. School officials met with the enforcement staff earlier this summer about a joint probe nearly 18 months ago about alleged improprieties involving another recruit.
