CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- The football staff at Virginia has gotten the news it least wanted -- star quarterback Matt Schaub has a separated shoulder.
The reigning ACC Player of the Year, who has been touted as a Heisman Trophy candidate on the school's Web site, was hurt on the Cavaliers' opening drive of the season Saturday night on a tackle by blitzing Duke linebacker DeAndre White.
"I wouldn't say it's a day-to-day basis, because it's not going to happen that fast -- but I'd say it's an ongoing basis as to when he comes back," said Coach Al Groh. "When that happens, it happens."
Sophomore Anthony Martinez, who redshirted last season, will start Saturday at South Carolina. He went 6-for-15 for 76 yards and one touchdown against the Blue Devils.
The school said Schaub will miss at least one game, likely two, meaning he is doubtful for Western Michigan on Sept. 13. The Cavaliers then have a bye before hosting Wake Forest on Sept. 27.
