Rockies ink Gregg Zaun

DENVER, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- The Colorado Rockies have signed Gregg Zaun, five days after the Houston Astros released the switch-hitting catcher.

Zaun, 32, batted .217 with one home run and 13 RBI in 59 games for the Astros.

"Not only am I trying out for the Colorado Rockies, but 27 or 28 other teams," Zaun said. "I didn't get much of an opportunity to play in Houston, and I figure I'll get a little more playing time here. I know that if I get the reps, I'll produce."

Both Zaun and regular backup catcher Bobby Estalella, who is on the disabled list and hasn't played since Aug. 10 because of an elbow problem that is not healing quickly, have contract issues.

Zaun will be a free agent in the offfseason, and Estalella will be eligible for arbitration.

To clear a roster spot, Colorado designated catcher Mandy Romero for assignment.
