Toronto 12, Boston 9

BOSTON, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- The Boston Red Sox, after rallying from an early six-run deficit, watched their bullpen blasted Tuesday in a 12-9 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Tied for the American League wild card lead, the Red Sox were hoping to solidify their postseason position against the Blue Jays, who were just 15-21 since the All-Star break. After rallying for a 7-7 tie in the seventh inning, however, Boston's rebuilt bullpen fell apart.

Midseason acquisitions Scott Sauerbeck and Scott Williamson were tagged for five runs in the eighth. Boston was unable to cash in a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the inning.

Toronto reliever Josh Towers (4-1) picked up the win with 3 2/3 solid innings, but Aquilino Lopez got the biggest outs en route to his seventh save.

Boston starter Tim Wakefield was tagged for seven runs and nine hits in 3 1/3 innings.
