Royals acquire OF White from Padres

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Aug. 26 (UPI) -- The Kansas City Royals added punch to their lineup Tuesday by acquiring veteran outfielder Rondell White from the San Diego Padres.

The Royals also received cash in the trade to help pay for the remainder of White's $5 million salary and sent two minor league pitchers -- Chris Tierney and Brian Sanches -- to San Diego.

Earlier Tuesday, the Padres acquired outfielder Brian Giles from the Pittsburgh Pirates for lefthander Oliver Perez, minor league outfielder Jason Bay and a player to be named.

The trade is the second in as many days for the Royals (67-62), who trail the Chicago White Sox (69-62) by one game in the American League Central.

White, 31, led the Padres with 66 RBI and ranked second on the team with 18 home runs in 115 games. He is hitting .278 with 17 doubles, three triples and 25 walks, and was San Diego's only All-Star this season.
