Reds ink Serafini

CINCINNATI, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- The Cincinnati Reds have signed journeyman lefthander Dan Serafini to a minor league contract.

He has been called upon to start Tuesday night's game against Milwaukee. Serafini was assigned to Triple-A Louisville, but will have his contract purchased in time for Tuesday's game. When it is, he will become the 50th player to appear in a game for Cincinnati this season, one shy of the 1993 team record.

Serafini, 29, who has pitched for Minnesota, the Chicago Cubs, San Diego, and Pittsburgh, will replace outfielder Reggie Taylor, who is expected to land on the disabled list with a dislocated left shoulder.

Serafini started the season with St. Louis, but was released April 21 after three appearances for Triple-A Memphis. He went 10-2 with a 1.59 ERA in 16 games, including one start, with Monterrey of the Mexican League.

The Reds continue to make wholesale changes. They have fired Manager Bob Boone, General Manager Jim Bowden, and have traded away pitchers Scott Williamson, Gabe White, Kent Mercker and Scott Sullivan, third baseman Aaron Boone and outfielder Jose Guillen.
