Servia captures provisional CART pole

MONTREAL, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Oriol Servia used some luck Friday in earning his first career provisional pole for the Champ Car World Series Molson Indy Montreal.

Servia narrowly avoided a disastrous crash in his Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone before posting a top qualifying speed of 120.234 miles per hour.

Late during the qualifying session, Servia caught Bruno Junqueira heading into a tight hairpin corner. Servia braked hard and tried to move to the inside, but the two cars brushed against each other.

The two were involved in a similar incident two weeks ago at Mid-Ohio.

Servia slowed dramatically before returning to action. With just one lap remaining after the incident, he posted his fastest of the day to earn the provisional pole position.

Series points leader Paul Tracy qualified second at 119.801 mph in his Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone with Junqueira using the same engine to place third at 119.697.
