WACO, Texas, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- The beleaguered men's basketball program at Baylor University found a coach on Friday in Scott Drew, late of Valparaiso.
School president Robert Sloan Jr. called it a "great day in the history of the university."
"We got our first choice for coach," Sloan said at a news conference. "He is a man of great integrity and a proven winner on the court and in life."
Scott Drew, 32, who led Valparaiso to the NIT in his first campaign as a head coach , could end up being very popular in Waco.
The program has been hit with a bunch of negatives this year, including the shooting death of redshirt Patrick Dennehy, the murder charges against teammate Carlton Dotson, and the taping of former coach Dave Bliss, who concocted a plan to finger Dennehy as a drug dealer.
"This is definitely a David vs. Goliath situation," Drew said, "and it might take some time, but our staff will have the work ethic, integrity, and commitment necessary to get this program going in the right direction."
Bliss also attempted to orchestrate a cover-up within the program distance himself from an investigation surrounding illegal tuition payments to Dennehy.
Another player alleges Bliss instructed him to lie to investigators.
