OAKMONT, Pa., Aug. 21 (UPI) -- George Zahringer and Jerry Courville won twice for the veterans Thursday, advancing to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Zahringer, 50, and Courville, 44, both had one-sided and narrow victories on a long day at the Oakmont Country Club, during which both the second and third rounds were played.
Zahringer defeated Korey Mahoney, 4 & 2, and J.J. Killeen, 2 & 1. Courville eliminated Billy Hurley, 1-up, and Todd White, 4 & 3.
Also winning twice Thursday were Patrick Carter, Lee Williams, Casey Wittenberg, Nick Flanagan of Australia, David Oh and Bill Haas. Flanagan is the only non-American among the quarterfinalists.
Oh knocked out Trip Kuehne in the morning round, 2 & 1. Kuehne was the leading amateur in this summer's U.S. Open.
