Saints ink Ki-Jana Carter

NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- The New Orleans Saints have signed injury-plagued running back Ki-Jana Carter, a former No. 1 overall draft pick.

Carter, a standout in college at Penn State, has had an up-and-down pro career because of knee injuries. He was a No. 1 pick by Cincinnati in 1995.

"We are looking for a backup running back and he has a lot of skins on the wall," said Saints Coach Jim Haslett. "He has played a lot in this league. I think he rushed for 100 yards the last time he played against us. He was out of football last year. He was in great condition. He looks like he is in pretty good shape. We are just giving him an opportunity."

Carter, out of football in 2002 after being released by Green Bay in training camp, has 1,055 yards rushing and 19 touchdowns along with 65 pass receptions for 458 yards.

For Washington in 2002, he rushed 63 times for 308 yards for a career-best 4.9 per carry average.
