Martinez, Dokic advance at Pilot Pen

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Seventh seed Conchita Martinez of Spain easily advanced Monday to the second round of the Pilot Pen Tennis.

Martinez beat Japanese qualifier Saori Obata, 6-2, 6-2, at this $625,000 hardcourt tournament, the final tuneup before next week's U.S. Open. She got just her second win in her last five matches.

Yugoslavian wild card Jelena Dokic rolled past American Meghann Shaughnessy, 6-2, 6-4. Dokic, who was seen her WTA Tour ranking drop from No. 8 to No. 23, next faces top seed Lindsay Davenport of the United States.

Two Russians won their opening-round matches as Vera Zvonareva beat American Sarah Taylor, 6-2, 6-0, and Elena Bovina defeated Australian Alicia Molik, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

Zimbabwe's Cara Black routed Rita Grande of Italy, 6-2, 6-1, and Swiss Myriam Casanova beat American Laura Granville, 6-1, 6-1.
