Twins waive Baldwin

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Veteran righthander James Baldwin may have reached the end of the line Thursday after he was designated for assignment by the Minnesota Twins.

The move came after a disastrous relief outing in the Twins' 8-3 loss to Cleveland. In the contest, he gave up three runs on four hits in one inning. Baldwin. 32, allowed four home runs in his last two relief outings, including three on Tuesday.

"They gave me a chance," Baldwin said. "There are no hard feelings today. These guys gave me an opportunity to go out there and do what I needed to do."

Baldwin, once a premier hurler, has three days to decide if he wants to accept a minor league assignment or become a free agent. He was signed to a minor league deal in June and promoted on July 8. He was 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in 10 appearances.

To take his roster spot, the Twins recalled right-hander Grant Balfour from Triple-A Rochester of the International League.
