Texas 6, Detroit 3

ARLINGTON, Texas, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- John Thomson pitched seven innings Thursday night as Texas continued to show signs of life in a 6-3 victory over Detroit.

Shane Spencer homered and Laynce Nix drove in a pair of runs for the Rangers, who improved to 9-4 in August and have the American League's best winning percentage in the month.

Texas, which jumped to a 5-1 lead after three innings, has won 13 of its last 18 games, but remains in last place in the American League West.

Thomson (10-10) reached double digits in wins for the first time in his career by allowing three runs and nine hits in seven innings. The veteran righthander did not walk a batter and struck out six to win his third straight decision.

Thomson worked out of danger in the sixth after allowing singles to Dmitri Young and Carlos Pena.
