Rain slows action at Rogers Cup AT&T

TORONTO, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Vera Zvonareva of Russia was one of several players to complete their matches Monday before rain halted first-round play at the Rogers AT&T Cup.

Zvonareva, seeded No. 10, beat Austrian Barbara Schett, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3), in her first match of the summer hardcourt season. She had not played a tournament since reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon last month due to an elbow injury.

The 18-year-old Russian captured her first career title at the Croatian Bol Ladies Open on May 4. She also advanced to the quarterfinals at Strasbourg and Vienna.

In an upset, Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik defeated Silvia Farina Elia, 6-4, 7-5.

Also, Indonesia's Angelique Widjaja beat Switzerland's Emmanuelle Gagliardi, 6-2, 6-2; Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano beat Spaniard Arantxa Parra, 6-2, 6-4; and Spain's Magui Serna bounced Tina Pisnik of Slovenia, 7-5, 6-3.
