Charlotte 69, Connecticut 68

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Dawn Staley came back Saturday from an ankle injury to bank in a follow shot that beat the buzzer and gave Charlotte a 69-68 victory over Connecticut.

The game between teams gunning for second place in the WNBA Eastern Conference had a playoff atmosphere. Charlotte (16-12) won for the third time in four games and opened a two-game lead over Connecticut (14-14).

A 3-pointer by Katie Douglas gave the Sun a 68-67 lead with 26 seconds remaining. Tammy Sutton-Brown missed badly on a driving shot from the right side. The rebound bounced off the backboard right to Staley, who tossed in a five-footer as the horn sounded.

Staley scored 11 points. Andrea Stinson scored 19 and Shalonda Enis added 14 for the Sting. Nykesha Sales scored a career-high 29 points and Douglas added10 for the Sun.
