San Jose 1, Kansas City 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Landon Donovan scored early and Frank Yallop became the winningest coach in team history as Friday night as San Jose blanked Kansas City, 1-0.

Donovan broke through in the 23rd minute, poking the ball past goalkeeper Tony Meola. Brian Mullan drilled the ball over the head of Brian Ching in the penalty area, picking out a wide-open Donovan on the far side. Taking advantage of the space created when Kansas City double-teamed Ching, Donovan took a short-range stab on net.

Meola made the save, but the rebound came back to Donovan, who slotted it into the net for his fourth goal.

The victory was the 36th for Yallop, who passed Brian Quinn for the team record.
