Atlanta 7, St. Louis 2

ST. LOUIS, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Andruw Jones and Javy Lopez broke open the game in the eighth with two of Atlanta's four home runs Friday night as the Braves whipped St. Louis, 7-2.

Russ Ortiz posted his 16th victory of the season.

Entering the game atop the National League with 170 homers, the Braves wasted little time giving Ortiz a lead. Gary Sheffield belted a solo shot with two out in the first inning and Marcus Giles added a two-run blast in the third.

Atlanta took a 4-2 lead into the eighth when Jones gave Ortiz breathing room with a two-run homer. Lopez followed with his 31st of the season, giving the Braves 10 more home runs than their entire 2002 total.
