Jazz re-signs Arroyo

SALT LAKE CITY, July 31 (UPI) -- Carlos Arroyo, who will be one of the point guards trying to replace John Stockton, re-signed with the Utah Jazz Thursday.

After the Jazz were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, Stockton - the NBA all-time leader in assists and steals - announced his retirement.

Arroyo is part of a three-pronged plan to replace Stockton. The Jazz also drafted Alabama point guard Maurice Williams in the second round and have 2001 first-round pick Raul Lopez as the projected starter.

A native of Puerto Rico who will participate in next month's FIBA Tournament of the Americas in his homeland, Arroyo averaged 2.8 points and 1.2 assists in 44 games last season, playing behind Stockton and Mark Jackson.
