Deals made on MLB deadline day

NEW YORK, July 31 (UPI) -- Several deals were made Thursday before the 4 p.m. Major League Baseball deadline.

The New York Yankees made three of them. They got third baseman Aaron Boone from Cincinnati for highly touted southpaw pitching prospect Brandon Claussen, and righthanded reliever Gabe White from the Reds, and sent third baseman Robin Ventura to Los Angeles, which needs hitting desperately.

Also, Baltimore dealt righthander Sidney Ponson, who is 14-6, to San Francisco for promising southpaws Damian Moss and Kurt Ainsworth.

Boston added more pitching, getting righthander Jeff Suppan from Pittsburgh for infield prospect Freddy Sanchez. The Red Sox had released righthander Chad Fox, but have gotten southpaw Scott Sauerbeck and righthander Scott Williamson in recent deals.

In a bit of a surprise, two playoff contenders, Seattle and Atlanta, did not make any deals.
