Leetch returns to Rangers

NEW YORK, July 30 (UPI) -- Calling him the "cornerstone of the franchise," the New York Rangers agreed to terms Wednesday with two-time Norris Trophy winner Brian Leetch.

While the team did not disclose specifics, the Madison Square Garden Network - which telecasts Rangers' games - reported it is a two-year contract.

Leetch, 35, has spent his entire 16-year career with New York. But the Rangers traded his rights to the Edmonton Oilers on June 30 for goaltender Jussi Markkanen and a 2004 fourth-round draft pick.

"Brian Leetch represents everything it means to be a New York Ranger: class, pride and professionalism," General Manager and Coach Glen Sather said. "He is among the elite defensemen in the history of the National Hockey League and has been a cornerstone of this franchise for several years."
