Capriati retired with a right pectoral muscle pull just nine minutes into her second-round match Wednesday against Russia'a Elena Likhosteva. She was trailing at the time, 4-1.

"I tried but the last two days I've been taking care of it, I didn't practice at all," said Capriati, a two-time winner here who has not won since the 2002 Australian Open.

Earlier in the day, No. 9 seeded Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia erased a match point before getting past Katerina Srebotnik of Slovenia, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6).

In the lone upset of the day, unseeded American Lisa Raymond eliminated No. 8 seed Ai Sugiyama of Japan, 6-0, 2-6, 6-4. Mary Pierce of France routed Spain's Conchita Martinez 6-1, 6-3.
