SEATTLE, July 29 (UPI) -- The appeals process ran out on Rick Neuheisel Monday night when the University of Washington upheld the firing of the embattled football coach.
The school fired Neuheisel on July 12 for breaking NCAA rules prohibiting gambling. Subsequent appeals were rejected by Athletic Director Barbara Hedges and school Vice President Norm Arkans.
Monday night, after a brief meeting between Neuheisel and school officials, the school issued a statement saying Neuheisel has been terminated for cause.
NCAA bylaw 10.3 prohibits athletic department employees and
student-athletes from gambling on college and pro sports. Neuheisel has admitted to entering high-stakes gambling pools during the last two NCAA men's basketball tournaments, but claimed he was told by a school official that he had permission to participate in the pools as long as they did not take place on school grounds.
At a Tuesday news conference, offensive coordinator Keith Gilbertson is expected to be named head coach. Gilbertson has been in charged of the program while the school handled Neuheisel's firing.
Gilbertson, 55, was the offensive coordinator under Don James on Washington's 1991 co-national championship team.
