NEW YORK, July 28 (UPI) -- Mike Piazza reacted quickly.
The Bergen Record reported Sunday that a source indicated the veteran New York Mets catcher wants to be traded. On Monday, the paper quoted him as saying he has no desire to be traded and that the Mets have no plans to deal him.
"From an ownership standpoint, we have no intention of trading Mike," said CEO Fred Wilpon. "If he has any of those feelings, he's never said anything to us."
Tom Glavine also denied saying that he did not want to pitch to Piazza if he returns as a catcher.
""Never in my life have I ever said that I wouldn't throw to anyone," Glavine said. "There's no room for that."
Piazza has been on the disabled list since May 16, when he tore a groin muscle in a game at San Francisco.
"I guess I'm the monkey this week," said Piazza. "You have to fill lines (in the paper). I'm not even playing and I'm the monkey. It's kind of cute."
Piazza needs eight home runs as a catcher to become baseball's all-time leader in that category. He could be back on Aug. 12.
