BOSTON, July 27 (UPI) -- Jason Varitek hit a three-run homer and Johnny Damon followed with a solo shot in a six-run seventh Sunday as Boston beat the New York Yankees, 6-4.
Baseball's top-hitting team, the Red Sox were limited to two singles by Jeff Weaver, and trailed 3-0 entering the bottom of the seventh.
Weaver struck out Kevin Millar to start the seventh before walking Trot Nixon and hitting Bill Mueller with a pitch..
Lefthander Chris Hammond entered and Varitek crushed a 1-1 pitch over the "Green Monster" in left field, tying the game.
Then Damon pulled a 3-2 pitch just inside the right field line for his ninth homer.
Hammond (2-1) had surrendered just two homers in his last 117 2/3 innings.
Lefthander Jesse Orosco came on and David Ortiz greeted him with a triple to giveg the Red Sox a 6-3 lead.
