TURNBERRY, Scotland, July 25 (UPI) -- Carl Mason of England grabbed the lead Friday at the Senior British Open, carding a six-under-par 64 at Westin Turnberry Resort.

Mason, a rookie on the European Senior Tour, enjoyed a bogey-free round at famed course at Turnberry, reaching nine-under 131 midway through the fifth and final major on the Champions Tour this season.

It is the first major for Mason, who is appearing in his third event on Europe's elder circuit. He turned 50 a month ago, and won his last start, the Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open.

He is a stroke better than Champions Tour rookie D.A. Weibring, whose 63 matched the course record, and gave him the clubhouse lead at eight-under 132. Weibring hit 50 two months ago.

Tom Watson, Tom Kite, and Bruce Summerhays share third at seven-under 133, with Jim Colbert and Russell Weir of Scotland another stroke off the pace.
