Twenty-eight years ago at Turnberry, Watson earned one of his five British Open titles by holding off Nicklaus in what has been dubbed the "Duel in the Sun." He shot a four-under-par 66.

Nicklaus recorded his third-best round of the season, an even-par 70 that has him tied for 21st. He also struggled off the tee in a threesome with Watson and Carl Mason of England.

Kite opened with a double-bogey, but had six birdies, closing with two in a row for a share of the lead. He and Watson are a stroke better than a group of seven that includes Mason, Fuzzy Zoeller, and defending champion Noboru Sugai of Japan.
