McCrary, 35, a sack specialist, has been hampered by chronic knee problems the last two seasons. The 11-year veteran from Wake Forest has played just 15 games in 2001 and 2002.

"It's an unfortunate set of circumstances that lead us to this, but certainly, everyone can see and understand that from a business standpoint, and even from Michael's standpoint, that this is something we need to do," said Coach Brian Billick. "We're going to miss Michael, we're going to miss his enthusiasm, his passion for the game."

McCrary has 51 career sacks, ranking him second to Peter Boulware on the team's all-time list. He has earned two Pro Bowl selections with Baltimore.
