The top-seeded American got past 18-year-old Marion Bartoli of France, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, in a second-round match.

Capriati, who received a bye in the first round, has reached five semifinals this year. She is playing in her first tournament since a three-set loss to eventual champion Serena Williams in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon.

Fellow American Alexandra Stevenson was not as fortunate, falling to No. 5 seed Jolena Dokic of Yugoslavia, 6-3, 6-2. Dokic has reached five quarterfinals and one semifinal this year.
