MIAMI, July 23 (UPI) -- Diego converted a penalty in overtime Wednesday night as Brazil rallied for a 2-1 triumph over the United States in the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals.
Brazil advanced to face the winner of Mexico-Costa Rica in the finals in Mexico City on Sunday.
The Americans will face the loser of that semifinal matchup in Miami on Saturday.
Brazil scored the in the 100th minute when Cory Gibbs handled a ball to keep it out of the net, earning a penalty kick and an ejection. Diego converted the attempt to knock the defending champs out of the tournament.
The United States got a goal from Carlos Bocanegra in the 62nd minute with a point-blank header off a restart after Adriano chopped down Earnie Stewart about 20 yards out.
But Kaka leveled the score in the 89th minute, capping a half hour of steady pressure.
