Ben Curtis withdraws from GHO

HARTFORD, Conn., July 22 (UPI) -- Fresh off his stunning victory at the British Open, Ben Curtis withdrew Tuesday from the Greater Hartford Open.

A 26-year-old PGA Tour rookie, Curtis became the most improbable of major champions Sunday by winning the British Open at Royal St George's Golf Club in England.

Curtis admitted the victory has taken something out of him heading into this week's event.

"The overwhelming experience of winning the Open Championship last week finally caught up with me and I'm exhausted," Curtis said. "Given my family wasn't in attendance at Royal St. George's, I am looking forward to sharing my Open victory with my family and friends at home."

Ranked 396th in the world before his shocking victory, Curtis became the first golfer in 90 years to win in his first major start.
