With one out in the bottom of the first, Oakland first baseman Scott Hatteberg misplayed a grounder by Cristian Guzman, allowing the ball to bounce off his glove into right field.

Jacque Jones, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list before the game, singled Guzman to second and Torii Hunter drove him in with a single to center.

Jones and Hunter advanced with center fielder Chris Singleton could not field the hit cleanly and A.J. Pierzynski made it 3-0 with a two-run single.

Pierzynski took second on the throw to the plate, advanced on a single by Doug Mientiewicz and scored on an error by right fielder Terrence Long.
