DETROIT, July 13 (UPI) -- Wilfredo Ledezma pitched seven scoreless innings in his second major league start and Dmitri Young homered Saturday as Detroit defeated Boston, 3-0.
The 22-year-old Ledezma (3-2) was selected from Boston in December in the Rule V draft. As a minor leaguer, the lefthander missed the 2001 season with arm problems and began this season in the bullpen.
Earlier this week, Ledezma replaced Adam Bernero in the rotation.Bernero and his 1-12 record were traded to the Colorado Rockies for catcher Ben Petrick.
The Red Sox came in leading the American League with a .295 average but were shut down by Ledezma, who allowed six hits without a walk while striking out two.
After Jamie Walker pitched a 1-2-3 eighth, Chris Mears worked a scoreless ninth for his fourth save in as many opportunities.
