Phoenix signs Cale Hulse

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., July 10 (UPI) -- The Phoenix Coyotes continued to revamp their defense Thursday, signing unrestricted free agent Cale Hulse to a multi-year contract.

Financial terms were not disclosed for Hulse, who was paid $1.21 million last season while playing for the Nashville Predators.

Hulse became a free agent after Nashville did not tender him a contract offer. He led the Predators with 121 penalty minutes in 2002-03, adding two goals and six assists in 80 games.

At the NHL draft on June 21, Phoenix sent defenseman Danny Markov to the Carolina Hurricanes for defensemen David Tanabe and Igor Knyazev.

The 29-year-old Hulse is the third defenseman to leave Nashville in the offseason following the trades of Andy Delmore and Karlis Skrastins to Buffalo and Colorado.
