Cleveland 3, NY Yankees 2 (10 inn.)

CLEVELAND, July 10 (UPI) -- Rookie Jody Gerut slapped a bases-loaded single up the middle in the 10th inning Thursday night to give Cleveland a 3-2 victory over the New York Yankees.

Gerut's hit added to the struggles of New York reliever Sterling Hitchcock (0-2), who failed to retire a batter in the 10th.

Hitchcock gave up a leadoff walk to Coco Crisp before Matt Lawton doubled into the right field corner, putting runners at second and third.

The Yankees intentionally walked Milton Bradley, but Gerut lined an 0-1 pitch through a drawn-in infield to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.

Jason Boyd (2-1), the Indians' fifth pitcher, tossed a scoreless inning to record the win. Four Cleveland relievers held the Yankees to one hit in four innings. New York's lead over Boston in the AL East was trimmed to two games.
