NEWPORT, R.I., July 9 (UPI) -- American wild card Bob Bryan defeated Serbian qualifier Dusan Vemic, 6-4, 6-2, Wednesday in the second round of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.
It was one of only three matches completed as rains disrupted the action.
Bryan's victory came after a rough day for Americans on Tuesday, when No. 1 seed James Blake and No. 3 Mardy Fish were upset and No. 2 seed Taylor Dent was forced to withdraw.
Bryan was forced out of the doubles competition Tuesday when his brother, Mike, pulled an oblique muscle.
Chris Guccione, a 17-year-old Australian, made a successful debut Wednesday, defeating Italy's Stefano Pescosolido, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4), in a first-round match.
Guccione is making his first appearance in the main draw of an ATP Tour event after reaching the Wimbledon junior final last week.
