Knee injury ends season for Patterson

CHICAGO, July 8 (UPI) -- Chicago Cubs outfielder Corey Patterson, who suffered a torn ACL on Sunday, is expected to sideline him for the remainder of the season.

Patterson was forced to leave a 4-1 loss to St. Louis when he came down awkwardly on the bag at first in the eighth inning. The injury originally was diagnosed as a sprained right knee, but an MRI revealed a torn ACL and torn meniscus in his left knee.

Patterson was among the players listed on the ballot to determine the final spot on the National League roster for next week's All-Star Game. Dusty Baker, the NL manager, replaced Patterson on the ballot with Kenny Lofton of Pittsburgh.

Patterson has been placed on the 15-day disabled list and replaced by outfielder Trenidad Hubbard, who was recalled from Triple-A Iowa of the Pacific Coast League.

In his second full season in the majors, Patterson, 23, is hitting .298 with 13 homers and 55 RBI. He batted .253 in his rookie campaign.
