Federer wins Wimbledon title

LONDON, July 6 (UPI) -- Roger Federer beat Australian Mark Philippoussis, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) at Wimbledon Sunday to become the first Swiss man to win a Grand Slam title.

Federer joined Martina Hingis as the only Grand Slam winners from Switzerland. He is the first Swiss-born player to claim a crown at a major. Hingis, who retired earlier this year with five Grand Slam titles, was born in Kosice, Slovakia.

The 21-year-old from Basel also became the first Wimbledon boys' champion to win the men's event since Stefan Edberg claimed his second crown in 1990.

Federer fired 21 aces and never faced a break point. He is the first man to lose just one set en route to the title since Richard Krajicek in 1996.

Martina Navratilova, 46, teamed with India's Leander Paes to capture the mixed doubles crown, matching Billie-Jean King's record of 20 Wimbledon titles.
