Clarke, Price share European Open lead

DUBLIN, Ireland, July 4 (UPI) -- Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland and Phillip Price of Wales earned a share of the lead Friday after two rounds of the European Open.

Clarke made up a one-stroke deficit with a 4-under-par 68, a day after hitting the head of U.S. Open runner-up Stephen Leaney's wife with an errant drive. The 2000 champion had a 36-hole total of 9-under 135.

Price shot 69 with Alastair Forsyth and 18-year-old Charl Swartzel of South Africa a stroke off the pace at 8-under 136.

Clarke birdied two of his last three holes to catch Price. He placed a call to Leaney's wife to apologize again for Thursday's incident.

"I didn't see her on the course today," Clarke said, "but I said that if she did come out, she should not stand low and left at about 270 yards."
