Neuheisel appeal denied

SEATTLE, July 2 (UPI) -- Rick Neuheisel was fired a second time late Tuesday as football coach at Washington after his appeal was denied.

The Seattle Times reported that he was told of his termination in a letter by Athletic Director Barbara Hedges.

"I have carefully considered your response to my initial termination," Hedges wrote according to the paper. "I have concluded that there is just cause for the termination of your employment contract based upon all the reasons stated in my June 11 letter."

Neuheisel was told he was being terminated for participating in NCAA basketball pools in 2002 and '03. NCAA bylaw 10.3 prohibits athletic department employees and student-athletes from gambling.

He contended he was told in an email by a school official that he could enter the pool as long as it was an off-campus activity.

He also was fired for lying about his involvement in the pools to NCAA investigators in an interview on June 4.

He has one more appeal chance later this month.
