NY Mets 7, Montreal 6

NEW YORK, July 1 (UPI) -- Jose Vidro homered twice but mishandled a ground ball in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday as the New York Mets took a 7-6 victory over Montreal.

Playing their first game after trading second baseman Roberto Alomar to the Chicago White Sox, the Mets squandered leads of 3-2 and 6-3. Vidro hit a solo homer in the second inning, then capped a three-run eighth with a two-run blast off closer Armando Benitez (2-3) that forged a 6-6 deadlock.

New York had a runner at first with two out in the bottom of the ninth when Vidro bobbled rookie Jose Reyes' ground ball and threw late to second base. Tony Clark hit the next pitch from Julio Manon (0-2) down the right field line to score Joe McEwing with the winning run.

Reyes had two hits and drove in three runs and Jason Phillips contributed three hits.
