Merritt undergoes shoulder surgery

MILWAUKEE, July 1 (UPI) -- Marquette forward Scott Merritt underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder Tuesday but should be ready for preseason practice.

The 6-10 Merritt averaged 10.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game as a junior, posting five double-doubles. He must keep the shoulder immobilized for six weeks and should be able to participate in full-contact drills by Oct. 1.

"The procedure today was not a result of a re-occurence from a previous injury," Marquette Coach Tom Crean said. "The initial repair was arthroscopically checked and found to be intact."

The Golden Eagles went 27-6 and reached the Final Four before losing to Kansas in the national semifinals.
