Flyers ink Jeff Hackett

PHILADELPHIA, July 1 (UPI) -- The Philadelphia Flyers wasted little time dipping into the free agent pool Tuesday, signing veteran goaltender Jeff Hackett.

Hackett, 35, split last season between Montreal and Boston, going 15-17-2 with a 2.86 goals-against average and .911 save percentage. He had just an 8-9-0 mark with a 3.21 GAA and .894 save percentage after coming to the Flyers.

He likely will succeed Roman Cechmanek, who was criticized harshly for his inconsistent play in last season's playoffs.

"Our scouting staff, our coaching staff, our whole organization feels that Jeff Hackett will give us the solid and steady goaltending that we will need to make a run at the Stanley Cup," said General Manager Bob Clarke.

Hackett is just 156-234-50 with a 2.93 GAA and .902 save percentage in parts of 14 NHL seasons, but the Flyers are confident he can provide the goaltending the team needs.

He is reunited with a handful of former teammates, including Mark Recchi, Jeremy Roenick, and Tony Amonte.
