BALTIMORE, June 28 (UPI) -- Omar Daal Daal served up a three-run homer to Jason Michaels in the top of the 17th inning Friday night as Philadelphia topped Baltimore, 4-2.
Daal (4-10), relegated for the Orioles bullpen because of his ineffectiveness as a starter, allowed two hits in his two scoreless innings before breaking down in the 17th.
Jim Thome led off the inning by legging out a grounder to second base and Mike Lieberthal stroked a one-out single to put runners at the corners. Michaels, who replaced Ricky Ledee in left field in the 10th, belted a 1-1 pitch from Daal into the stands in left for his third homer of the season.
Dan Plesac (1-0), Philadelphia's seventh pitcher of the game, struck out four in two scoreless innings for the win. Hector Mercado notched his first major league save, despite allowing a homer to Luis Matos.
The Phillies were 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position before Michaels' homer.
