NY Yankees 6, NY Mets 4

NEW YORK, June 27 (UPI) -- David Wells scattered 12 hits over six innings Friday night and the New York Yankees held on for a 6-4 victory over the New York Mets.

Chris Hammond and Dan Miceli combined on three hitless frames to preserve the win.

Seeking his fourth straight win, Wells (10-2) gave up four runs and put men on base in every inning. But he benefited from double plays in the third and fourth and got a boost from his bullpen.

Hammond walked one and struck out one in two innings. Manager Joe Torre normally would have summoned Mariano Rivera to pitch the ninth, but the All-Star closer was unavailable after working each of the previous three nights.

Acquired from Cleveland on Wednesday, Miceli worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth for his first save since Aug. 19, 2001.
