Haas shares lead in Memphis

MEMPHIS, June 26 (UPI) -- Jay Haas just missed matching the PGA Tour record for consecutive birdies Thursday to grab a share of the lead after one round of the St. Jude Classic.

Haas, 49, birdied seven holes in a row en route to a 64 that left him tied with rookie Darron Stiles.

The record for consecutive birdies is eight, having been achieved by five players -- most recently J.P. Hayes at the 2002 Bob Hope Classic.

Following two delays, play was suspended due to darkness with 56 players still on the course.

Robert Damron shot a 65, a stroke better than David Gossett, Stan Utley and Dennis Paulsen. David Peoples was 6-under after 16 holes, while Len Mattiace was 5-under with the 18th still to play.
