Jose Canseco taken into custody

DAVIE, Fla., June 20 (UPI) -- Jose Canseco was taken into custody Friday after having tested positive for steroids earlier this month.

The former American League Most Valuable Player already was on probation stemming from his role in a nightclub brawl in 2001.

He originally violated that parole by leaving the state and failing to attend anger management classes. He was sentenced to two years of house arrest, followed by three years of probation.

This latest violation could result in Canseco, 38, spending up to 15 years in prison.

Since retiring last year, Canseco has threatened to expose what he has called "widespread" steroid usage in the game in a tell-all book. Although he has made repeated claims about "naming names" in his memoirs, no release date for the book has been announced.

Canseco, retired with 462 home runs, placing him 26th on the all-time list.
